Professor Vanezis began his career in Forensic Medicine in 1974 in Professor Malcolm Cameron's Department at the London Hospital Medical College. He has conducted in excess of 5,000 suspicious death autopsies, of which approximately 2,000 were homicides and has carried out approximately 1500 examinations on behalf of the defence.

Professor Vanezis has been the supervising pathologist in a number of multiple death incidents (major disasters) including The Charing Cross Road (Soho) Fire (37 victims), The Marine Barracks Bombing at Deal (11 victims), The Kathmandu (Thai Airways) air crash (113 victims) and The Chinook Helicopter Crash near Campbeltown (29 victims).

Additionally, since the beginning of the recent Iraq war, he has been to that region to assist in exhumations and autopsies on behalf of the Armed Forces and has given evidence on allegations of torture from the same region.

Until his recent appointment in London, Professor Vanezis was Head of Forensic Pathology Services for the Strathclyde region where he had day to day administrative and practical service functions and carried out and supervised autopsies on behalf of the Procurator Fiscal.
